Samuel de Champlain brings 40 settlers from France to settle New France, an area which becomes Montreal.
1811
Red River Settlement (Winnipeg) is established by Thomas, Earl of Selkirk, as a haven for landless Scots after British takes over estates in Scotland. Area also becomes a home for aging voyageurs and their families.
1821
Five families move from the Red River Settlement to St. Paul, led by Alexander Bailly.
1822 Stephen Long determines the location of the 49th parallel, dividing line between Canada and the United States. It also determined that Pembina is in the United States.
